Village nurses asked to carry out area surveillance around Dharapuram

A meeting of government medical officers held here on Thursday had resolved to intensify the IEC (information, education and communication) activities in the district to combat any possibilities of swine flu from spreading.

This decision was in the wake of a 55-year-old Tirupur resident who had been tested positive for A (H1N1) virus at a Coimbatore hospital on Tuesday.

Joint Director of Health G. Thirumalaisamy told The Hindu that the village health nurses posted across the district had been asked to carry out area surveillance to identify any person with symptoms of swine flu.

He said that the treatment of people with symptoms of A (H1N1) would be made by categorizing them into three broad categories.

“Those having the symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat and with or without head and body aches, are classified under category A, while the category B contain people aged above 55 years, children and pregnant women, among a few others, with symptoms mentioned under category A,” he added.

In both the categories, necessary tablets would be given to cure the flu.

Dr. Thirumalaisamy said isolation and admission into hospitals would be necessitated in the case of people coming under category C who have additional symptoms.

The Joint Director said that isolation wards for people infected with A (H1N1) had been readied at district headquarters hospital and taluk-level government hospitals located at Avinashi, Palladam, Udumalpet and Dharapuram.
